Saturday July 24th
Natural Dye Class!
Jenny Oliver, One of our contributors will be holding the above class.
From Jenny:
I'm proposing to hold a day-school on the farm in Smarden on Saturday 24th
July, from 10am till 4:30pm. As this is a much more primitive affair than
past classes, it is only £25. A shuttle car can be run from the nearby
mainline station in Pluckley if required.
If it rains or is otherwise inclement, we have a big old plastic tunnel
greenhouse to work in. The farm also affords the opportunity to walk about
and identify potential dyeplants, many of which grow wild in the hedges and
ditches there. A small caravan is also available for basic facilities,
discussion, presentation, etc.
We will look at weld and madder, as well as local plants. I hope there may
be some woad as well. The advantage of using the old greenhouse means that
I may well have a 'medieval indigo vat' on the go. Most of you will know
what I mean by that!
As ever, if you have your own fibre/fabric you wish to dye, let me know in
good time so that I can advise. We hope to look at wool and linen, to
highlight the differences between animal and vegetable fibre, and the
Different approaches needed for dyeing.
